Pichai grew up in Chennai, India. He earned a Bachelor of Technology degree from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, a Master of Science in materials science and engineering from Stanford University, and an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Wharton reports that he was named a Siebel Scholar and a Palmer Scholar.
Pichai joined Google in 2004 and helped lead the development of Google Toolbar and, subsequently, Google Chrome. His responsibilities expanded across products and platforms including Search, Maps, Android, Gmail and Google Workspace. He served as senior vice president of Android, Chrome and Apps from March 2013 to October 2014 and as senior vice president of Products from October 2014 to October 2015.
Pichai became Google CEO in 2015, although Alphabet sources differ on whether the relevant appointment date was in August or October. He joined Alphabet's board in July 2017, and on December 3, 2019, the board appointed him Alphabet CEO while he continued to lead Google. As of August 2026, he remained CEO of both companies and an Alphabet director.
Pichai's career spans the development and management of several of Google's major consumer and enterprise platforms, followed by leadership of the wider Alphabet group. Alphabet's 2026 proxy characterizes his tenure as CEO as having shifted the company's strategy toward artificial intelligence.
