Ryan Coogler is an Oakland-born American writer, director, and producer known for films including Fruitvale, Black Panther, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and Sinners. A graduate of USC's MFA Film and Television Production program, he is also a co-founder of Proximity Media.

Coogler is an Oakland-born American filmmaker. He attended Saint Mary's College on a football scholarship, transferred to California State University, Sacramento, and graduated with a bachelor's degree in finance. He later completed USC's MFA Film and Television Production program in 2011.
Coogler wrote and directed his feature debut, Fruitvale, which received both the U.S. Dramatic Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. He subsequently directed and co-wrote Black Panther, then wrote and directed Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Sinners was presented as his first original feature film as a writer-director.
Beyond writing and directing, Coogler is a producer and co-founder of Proximity Media. In 2026, he won the Academy Award for Original Screenplay for Sinners. As of August 22, 2026, USC School of Cinematic Arts also listed him on its Board of Councilors, although that membership is time-sensitive and should be rechecked before publication.
