James Francis Cameron
James Francis Cameron is an Ontario-native Canadian filmmaker known for directing, writing and producing major films including The Terminator, Aliens, Titanic and the Avatar films. His public work also extends to deep-ocean exploration, ocean conservation and environmental entrepreneurship.

Cameron's early feature-directing credits include Piranha II: The Spawning, The Terminator, Aliens and The Abyss. He directed and co-wrote The Terminator, released in 1984, and founded the production company Lightstorm Entertainment in 1990. His later work includes Titanic and the Avatar films, which established him as a prominent director, writer and producer of large-scale feature films.
Titanic received 14 Academy Award nominations and won 11. Cameron personally received Oscars for Directing, Best Picture as a producer with Jon Landau, and Film Editing with Conrad Buff and Richard A. Harris. The Academy also records nominations for his work on Avatar and a Best Picture nomination for Avatar: The Way of Water. Canada appointed him a Companion of the Order of Canada in 2019, with investiture in 2024, and he was named a 2026 Governor General's Performing Arts Award recipient for Lifetime Artistic Achievement.
Alongside filmmaking, Cameron has pursued deep-ocean exploration and environmental work. National Geographic states that he has led eight ocean expeditions and identifies him as an Explorer-at-Large. On March 26, 2012, he completed a solo descent to Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench aboard the DEEPSEA CHALLENGER submersible.
