He began studying at Parsons School of Design in New York in 1981. After returning to China in 1993, he became active in Beijing contemporary-art circles and worked with curator Feng Boyi on the Black Cover Book, White Cover Book and Gray Cover Book, publications documenting developments in contemporary Chinese art.

Ai's public role has included work concerning the aftermath of the 2008 Sichuan earthquake. The Hirshhorn Museum documented his investigation into the earthquake's student victims, an effort that linked his artistic practice with public scrutiny and advocacy.

Detention and travel restrictions

Amnesty International documented Ai as being held incommunicado in April 2011, and The Washington Post reported that he was released on bail on June 22 after 81 days in detention. Chinese authorities returned his passport on July 22, 2015, allowing him to resume overseas travel after more than four years of restriction. The reviewed evidence establishes the detention, release and travel restriction, but not a definitive conclusion about the legal merits of official allegations or the political motive for his detention.
